Experimenting with Stencils

Hey, there!  How is your summer going?  I know, I know, it is almost over!  I am in denial about that fact myself but, I am sure most of you are in the process of resigning yourselves to it, as well.  Actually, summer has been a bit feisty here lately with heavy downpours day after day around.  The rain has kept me inside more than I like in the last few weeks and has forced me to think about inside crafts.

So, on one of those cloudy and rainy afternoons, I took a trip to Michaels craft store and discovered a fun new stencil for myself.  It is a Martha Stewart stencil, of course.  Her stuff is great!

I liked the simplicity of the stencil and I always seem to be drawn to flowers, anyway, so it seemed to be a good choice to purchase.

I thought the stencil would look cool printed on gray cardstock in either white or pale pink paint.  I ended up choosing the pale pink.

The stencils are adhesive stencils and I wasn't sure how they would work on cardstock.  Most recently, I have stenciled on fabric so this was going to be a new experience for me.  I hoped pressing the stencil onto paper would not ruin the adhesive of the stencil.  In hindsight, I would have purchased some dark gray fabric instead but I can always do that in the future. Beside, Michaels doesn't sell fabric by the bolt so, that would have included a trip to JoAnn Fabrics and, as I said, it was pouring.  So, that was a no-go that day :).

Even though the stencils were adhesive I needed to tape the sides with masking tape to make sure I didn't swipe the brush too far and put paint where it didn't belong.

However as I had feared, the masking tape tore the paper a little bit when I lifted up the stencil.  I tried my best not to have this happen.  I'll be looking into finding another kind of tape that will not stick so strongly to the paper in the future.  I am hoping there is such a thing :).

So even though, I really loved how these prints came out and I will probably put them in some frames...

I think I will go to JoAnn Fabrics after all to buy some fabric.  I think a linen or muslin might work well to stencil on.  Seeing that those fabrics are quite thin, I think it would be easy to put the finished product in a frame, as well.

I truly love these stencils and want to experiment with them more.  I think a muslin background with brown paint might look really nice too, especially for the fall.
