As I explained in Part One of this fall decorating mini-series I have going on here, I thought when my daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer and we were needed to help her fight this terrible battle, as well as, aid in the care of her young boys, that I was done with the non-essential, fluff parts of my life. Decorating my home for holidays or decorating in general seemed frivolous and trite, something I did not have the time, energy or desire to do with this looming weight hanging over Brittany and our family. However, as time passed and we got into a rhythm and started to find hope in Brittany’s situation, I discovered that I had missed the joy those “frivolous” things had brought me before this tragedy hit us and I started to miss them. Of course, I know there are many more important things to focus on, believe me. So many difficult things are happening in the world but, finding joy in life and providing warmth where you live can be important too. Sometimes you need those things to help you make it through.
So, before the month of October fades away, I would like to share some of the corners of my home that display examples of how I decorated for the autumn season.
Here is a display in the dining room~
I created this mantle arrangement from faux floral picks I have collected over the years. This adds
another fall touch to the room.
I also like saving pumpkins from year-to-year. I love the many textures of pumpkins
you can collect these days.
Now let's move onto the kitchen~
I have been decorating these "shelves" for many years,
and I have loved doing so.
However, I have found after the few years of living here that the eating area of the kitchen
is a little tight. It is fine for my husband and me but, when we have the grandkids over,
I am always afraid one of them might bump into this piece of furniture, topple it over and
get hurt. So...
I very recently purchased a new hutch for the kitchen. I also bought a new rug, too. I wanted to change things up a little in the room. I like the new hutch because it brings a warmth to the eating nook. That element was somewhat missing before.
I used many of the same fall decorations to fill the new hutch. I haven't had time to restyle this area of the room but, I will be more inventive come
Christmas decorating time and beyond. For now, this will do.
sitting room a few times before so, I am going to skip over that room today. If you would like to see last year's sitting room post, you can view it here.
Moving onto the family room~
Again, I extensively shared the fall family room last year, so I won't share it as a whole here today. You can see last year's post here if you would like.
I am sharing some of the new faux florals I found this year.
I liked the simplicity of the look below. It has been enjoyable to view while sitting on the sofa
throughout the fall.
Even small areas get a touch of fall in my house. This arrangement sits on the windowsill of the
first floor guest bathroom. I like accents of orange around the house this time of year. In a few weeks,
however, I will be ready to move onto Christmas colors.
My belief that "finding joy in life and providing warmth where you live" can be important in life too was validated when my husband and I recently hosted a family pizza party. We were celebrating some
good news that we had just received concerning Brittany's most recent PET scan. We needed to celebrate that! It just so happened that our oldest granddaughter was home from college that weekend too!
At that gathering my daughter, Amanda, walked in and said something like, "Mom, everything looks so warm and cozy! I love it!" Kylie, her daughter, also remarked in a good way, as she usually does. She likes checking out all the various rooms to see what I have done with the place :). I have to tell you those remarks made me feel pretty good! But being together was the best of all.
