Decorating with Gourds and Pumpkins

Hey, everyone!  I hope you are enjoying September so far.  Life seems to have taken right off now that the summer is over with fall activities.  Before you know it, we will be doing some autumn decorating.  You can feel it in the air. As this week has progressed I have started thinking about buying mums and seasonal flowers.  The next thing to come will be the desire to place pumpkins and gourds all over the place!  So, today I thought we would start with a little fall decorating preview~

Of course, the best place to find the best supply of pumpkins and gourds is your local farm stand or garden center.  This one is not too far down the road from my house and I frequent it often. I am usually successful in finding something I'd like to buy with every visit :).

The easiest and arguably the prettiest way to decorate with gourds is to simply arrange them in some kind of vessel.  This vessel is an old and cracked bird bath but it works here.

The decorated bird bath creates a visible focal point for this garden.

There are so many seasonal plants in September so, why not add them into your fall landscape?

Sedum is a wonderful plant in the fall. It is a great perennial plant and most likely will return year and year in your garden once planted.

Arranging many of the elements of fall like hay bales and cornstalks is always fun and adds lots of color too!

I like when the corn is still attached to the cornstalks.  So cool!

It is easy to decorate a window box with gourds and pumpkins and seasonal plants.  There isn't much in the way of planting although, I did plant a grass in the middle of the window box and an ornamental cabbage to the side. The pumpkins and gourds simply sit in the window box, making for an easy installation.

Sometimes all you need to add a little impact is a collection of greens (these are different eucalyptus varieties) placed on a table or chair with a pumpkins sitting on top of it.  Very, very simply but beautiful at the same time.

This photo was taken in Washington D.C. at the  US Botanical Garden.  I thought it was a beautiful display of gourds and pumpkins.  It serves as an inspiration for me to make a beautiful display of my own. The placement of the grasses, pumpkins, flowers and gourds is exquisite.  I guess you would expect nothing less from the US Botanical Garden, right?

Are you inspired to do some of your own fall decorating?
I hope so :).
